4-Steps To Uncovering Sexual Abuse

It’s unrealistic to think that a parent will know exactly what to do while navigating through the pressures of a child sexual abuse disclosure. That’s why P.A.X.A. has created 4-Steps to Uncovering Sexual Abuse; so parents can be informed, vigilant on the protection front, and stop abuse if it has occurred.

Step 1: Get informed.

If you don’t understand how child sexual abuse occurs, you can’t prevent it. P.A.X.A. is structured to inform parents, adults, and children through our various communication outlets. All of our resources are intended to inform parents and children of the facts.

Step 2: Ask questions.

Talking openly with your child breaks down communication barriers that predators exploit. Ask questions about who your child has been around. Ask them how they are feeling. Talk openly about boundaries to empower children to share any uncomfortable encounters. By asking questions, a parent is able to monitor for “red flag predatory behavior.”

Step 3: Remove the child.

In the event that “red flag behaviors” are being exhibited towards your child, it’s vital to immediately remove the child from the situation. Minimize opportunities that expose your child to predators. Eighty percent of sexual abuse cases occur during quiet moments, isolation and one-on-one situations. A safe environment reduces the likelihood of sexual abuse or in some cases, continued abuse.

Step 4: Start Healing.

Healing starts with immediately reporting the incident to the authorities and candidly sharing the experience with anyone you know who has contact with the predator. Meet with professional therapists who specialize in sexual abuse. Healing is a very important part of P.A.X.A.’s process because it’s something that a parent and child need to do together. Sweeping it under the rug is a bad solution that only leads to more problems down the road.
